Are Your Cravings For God?

We sometimes have a craving for something good, but no matter what we eat nothing fulfills our taste buds. Our hunger and thirst are our natural expressions of the basic human desire and need for food and water. Think of a craving as an intense desire for something specific. Did you know that some cravings, such as sugar, give you quick energy, but not necessarily good energy? However, some food ingredients and sinful cravings can trick our bodies and minds into not recognizing these things, causing “rebound hunger and weaknesses.” Does that mean that some of us develop a craving and appetite for the wrong things like sex addiction, lust or adultery? Physical foods are sometimes used for boredom, emotional, and stressful eating, in an effort to make you feel better or to fill a void in your life. However, Satan wants to do everything possible to replace our craving for God with something else. In Corinthians 6:12 (NLT) it says, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything.”

According to Dave Butts of Harvest Prayer Ministries, “…much as eating unhealthy junk food can dull physical appetite so that which is not of God can dull our spiritual appetite.” We cannot allow our souls to be so stuffed with junk, leaving no room for greatness. But whatever the weight that’s dragging you down spiritually, whether disappointment, bitterness or past hurts, you need to give it to God. However, we should never compromise good-quality of life for temporary fixations that will never give us the lasting pleasure we long for.

I honestly believe that God has put a spiritual hunger in us to crave intimacy and yearning just for Him. In Matthew 5:6 (NKJV), the Bible tells us, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” The word “filled” means fulfilled or satisfied. When we first give our lives to Christ, we begin to run and crave after our First Love. However, when we feel like nothing is happening when we pray, or God isn’t answering our prayers in a timely manner, we begin to take matters into our own hands. We must wait on the Lord and be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Joyce Meyer once said, “all of us will wait passively, or we’ll wait expectantly. A passive person hopes something good will happen and is willing to sit around waiting to see if it does. After a short time, he gives up, saying, “That’s it! I’ve waited and waited and nothing’s happened.” The passive person has a lot of wishbone but not much backbone!”

The Bible says in Matthew 4: 1-3, “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” However, we must understand how temptation works so that we can learn how to resist it. We can start craving the right things by reading and meditating on His Word (Holy Bible) which gives us strength enough to resist the temptations of Satan, who is invading and infiltrating God’s people with deception and lies. The Bible also reveals the mysteries of life. It reveals the future of humanity, renewal of minds, fruitfulness, and most of all, God’s Word is to know Jesus, the Way the Truth and the Life. Remember, focusing on our object of desire is temporary satisfaction and unending contentment. When you crave the right things, you will be able to live a truly content life that ravishes you with a taste and craving for God’s glory!
